He was a general in the British Army and, after seeing action in the Crimean War, was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1856 and awarded the Order of the Medjidie (fourth class) in 1858. In 1859 he was returned to parliament for County Antrim, a seat he held until 1863, when he succeeded his childless elder brother in the viscountcy.
